April 27 Backyard Blessings

Despite living so close to a major city, our backyard is a sanctuary.  It’s not just for us but for all sorts of wildlife – many different birds, chipmunks, squirrels, raccoons, rabbits, and oh yes – even an occasional possum.    I can sit on the back patio and feel like I’ve escaped to a magical forest, complete with fairy dust (aka pollen).

Today I am thankful for our sanctuary

  1. .. the canopy of trees that house choirs of birds.
  2. .. the Blue Jay who has made her nest inside the wall pocket on the rear wall of the house  (I hope we find a shared and peaceful equilibrium.)
  3. .. the magical red leaves of the Japanese Maple.

For what are you thankful?

April 20 Spring Mist

Spring storms marched across the landscape this week, toppling ancient trees and disrupting basic services for days.   If you wait patiently you can see a healing mist filling the empty spaces, promising a safer passage.

Today I am thankful for things that keep me safe:

  1. I am thankful that this time we were spared the sound of timber crashing into the house, but my heart goes out to those who are rebuilding and recovering.
  2. Despite the destruction, I am thankful for the strong rain as it washes the pollen from the air and makes allergies more tolerable.
  3. For those that stand by me and quietly look after me out of love and not obligation, I am truly thankful.

For what are you thankful?

It’s time for Spring cleaning – clearing space, making room, simplifying.  I like discovering the beauty of white space in my life.

Today, I am thankful for white space and ways to live a life made simple.

  1. Time alone followed by happy homecomings.
  2. A simple yet heart warming dinner with loved ones.
  3. And for my job, that I enjoy, appreciate and look forward to every day, even on Mondays.

For what are you thankful?

April 6 Lilacs and Laughter

with 10 comments

April is the cruelest month, breeding
Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing
Memory and desire, stirring
Dull roots with spring rain.

(T. S. Eliot, from The Waste Land)

April has finally made it to the party.  She waltzes in, pale pink party dress swishing around bare legs and feet with a smile so bright it floods the room and a laughter that reaches in and tugs at your heart until you join her.   Deceptively beautiful and secretly unsure of herself, she fills the dance hall with fragrance and light. Maybe Eliot was too hard on her?

Today, I am thankful for the things that make me smile:

  1. My cat’s unwavering yet endearing persistence.
  2. The brush of breeze from the edge of a hawk’s wings against my cheek.
  3. The quiet laugh that made me smile just before falling asleep.

For what are you thankful?
