“You find no man, at all intellectual, who is willing to leave London. No, Sir, when a man is tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford.”   – Samuel Johnson

This week was a treasure trove endowing me with intellectual, spiritual, experiential and physical highs the likes of which one could become accustomed quite easily.

I am thankful for my many blessings

  1. the chance to travel and be gently reminded of the complexities and simple nature of people.
  2. being immersed in an intellectual sea teeming with diversity of thought and insights.
  3. the warm embrace of home, complete with new focus and new energies.

For what are you thankful?

March 22 Springish

It was one of those March days when the sun shines hot and the wind blows cold:  when it is summer in the light, and winter in the shade.  ~Charles Dickens

Saturday was the first day of Spring.  I’m staring out the window at bright yellow daffodils dusted with .. snowflakes.

The muffled voice of the HVAC repairman is distracting my racing mind; I think he’s humming the theme from The Sting.   I left him there to work his magic, something about a cracked whumajungajiggy.  It’s okay, he has one in the truck (whew).

Today, I’m a whirl in life’s little detours but I’m thankful that I am enjoying the ride and for …

  1. Spring – even if she’s a little shy this year.
  2. Ronnie, our infinitely dependable and always happy HVAC guy.
  3. this week’s chance to soak up new ideas and meet some brilliant people who share my passion but with far more qualifications than I.

For what are you thankful?

March 18 Luck

We lost someone very dear to us this past week and although our imminent collective fate was hard to ignore, it’s still hard to accept when at last you have to stand and say goodbye. Monday we gathered as scores of friends and family gathered to pay their respects and on more than one occasion this was spoken “I was lucky to have known him”.  We all were quite lucky indeed.

So today, finally with my wits about me, I realized I forgot to post my three thanks on Monday but as luck would have it – the week’s not over yet.

I would rather be lucky than good any day.

Today, I’m thankful that

  1. I could take time from work and be with the ones I love.
  2. everyone traveled safely.
  3. I was lucky enough to know a man whom I can only aspire to emulate – his love, laughter, dignity, kindness and open heart.

For what are you thankful?

March 8 Stretch

Gratitude is merely the secret hope of further favors.   – Francios De La Rochefoucauld

This has been one of those predatory weeks.  The kind that pluck at you from your normal routine as if it was your turn to play out your role in the food chain.  Day after day, your heart and soul fills up with dark liquid and you think you might drown from the inside out.

It’s hard to find gratitude in these waters.  It’s hard to see, it’s hard to wade through the murk and you think it might be best just to skip this one and catch up next week when you are “feeling it”.

But perhaps it’s now even more important to stretch your wings and  find a few morsels of gratitude.

Today I am thankful

  1. to have a furry paw insistently tapped against my cheek
  2. for the broad wing hawk who stopped two feet from the kitchen window and winked “good morning”
  3. for being blessed with always on connections, digital, analog, carbon based  .. because while sometimes I love to be alone, I hate to be lonely.

For what are you thankful?

March 2 Nostalgia

Monday escaped my grasp, but that’s why we love Tuesday.

This weekend I had a hour of extra sleep and fell into one of those half-dreams where you relive a moment in your life.  So there I was, piled in the back of a motor home on the top bunk riding through the streets of South Central Los Angeles and Santana was blasting on an 8 track tape player – just like the one pictured above.  I was the youngest by about two years on a traveling softball team and we heading to a game and I can still hear the laughter and feel the love we developed for the game and each other.  I played a lot of sports in my youth and these memories are the happiest.

Today I am thankful for

  1. a tiny dash of nostalgia to slow down an otherwise crazy day.
  2. the game of hockey and the joy it brings so many.
  3. every Tuesday that follows so gracefully on the heels of Monday.

For what are you thankful?
