April 26 Place

“This is the creed of Hotel Tumbleweed.  Give what you can, take what you need.”

Today my mind traveled in circles, but always returned to this lovely place – Shakespeare and Company.  I remember clearly how the light fell in particular places there so as to hold you quietly in place. I do love a strong sense of place.

Today I am thankful for

  1. quiet places of comfort.
  2. the happy anticipation of a home cooked meal.
  3. a good hard rain to clear away the yellow.

For what are you thankful?

April 19 Bedrock and Boulders

Sometimes  in the swirling haze of life’s confusion it’s good to just look down at your feet and see where they are planted. If you are lucky, you see a mossy green running along the edge of solid rock – and if you don’t, look a little harder because it’s probably there beneath the silt.

Today I am thankful for the rocks in my life

  1. for the solid bedrock of love beneath my feet.
  2. for the pebbles that slow me down gently when I’ve gathered too much speed.
  3. for the boulders that challenge me to try harder, to test my will and endurance.

For what are you thankful?

April 12 Mystery

with 5 comments

The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and all science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead: his eyes are closed.   –Albert Einstein

Just as I got home from brunch yesterday, something caught my eye in the greenery – it was a butterfly as large as my palm.  Wings open proudly, perfectly still and breathtakingly beautiful, she sat in contrast to the quiet dark green. By the time I’d gone to retrieve my camera, she was gone – leaving but a mark of mystery on my day.

Today I am thankful for

  1. the mysterious gifts of Spring (and there is no mystery in pollen, that can be safely discounted).
  2. a new routine.
  3. a gift to myself, selfish and borderline audacious but oh so overdue.

For what are you thankful?

April 5 Eggs!

with 4 comments

I love eggs – no really, I truly love them. I’m not sure how I came to love eggs the way I do given the trouble they were in my youth.

When I was growing up the laying hens hated me so passionately it’s a miracle I made it out of the hen house on any given day with both of my eyes. The worst event was the day they actually seemed to cooperate in an all out attack – three held me down squawking and flapping wildly whilst the largest tried desperately to peck me blind. I escaped bloody and scarred with nary a fresh egg in hand to be met by the wrath of my Grandmother but was fortunately saved by my Grandfather’s stifled giggle and quick thinking reassignment to the garden to gather roots.

I know it’s not a lovely story but I do still love eggs and I’m not much of a carrot fan.

So today I’m still basking in a weekend almost wholly dedicated (even if in just my mind) to eggs and I am thankful …

  1. for weekend breakfasts of over easy and scrambled
  2. for lunch and dinner brimming with hard boiled and deviled
  3. for happy childhood memories of hunting, gathering and coloring.

For what are you thankful?
