August 30 Together

One day I was walking deep in the woods with my grandfather and I stopped to ask him the question that had been bugging me for a while. “What’s heaven like?” He didn’t even break his stride as he replied “I can’t imagine it’s much different that this right now.”

Today I am thankful

  1. for all those bits of heaven  – those simple spark-filled moments of together.
  2. for an artisan roofer.
  3. for a hint of Fall .. and for the record I’m ready to be far more grateful 😉

And you?

Bob 2002-2010

I will cherish everything you taught me – except that part about my brand new leather jacket. (I think we can both safely forget that one.)

Thank you for the joy.

August 17 Scale

I sat down twice to craft Three Thanks but I was trapped in that feeling of utter insignificance. I want to fix things I can’t fix and I am so stubborn that instead of accepting that and moving on to what I can do, I fixate almost to the point of obsession. (I said almost.) The problem is at that point everything stands still.

The challenge, it seems is a matter of scale and how it’s perceived. From one vantage, we are but a fleck in the vast expanse. How can anything we do matter? Looking through the other end, we are immersed in unending amounts of opportunity. How can anything we do not matter?

Yesterday I was looking through the wrong end of the telescope.

Today I am thankful for

  1. a gentle nudge to turn around the telescope.
  2. a night of peaceful dreams about the stars.
  3. the slight smell of Fall in the air (okay, that’s entirely my imagination but I’m thankful for it nonetheless).

For what are you thankful?

August 9 Be Prepared

with 3 comments

One morning I woke up and realized out of the blue that we had really no family disaster plan. None whatsoever.

I thought that might be true for most of our close friends as well so we set out to get everyone at least thinking about it, but really to rectify it. We all met for dinner, talked about the scope of what we could consider – from a major disaster to more likely extended inconveniences – we divvied up the research and we were on our way.

This weekend we had a big potluck followed by a review of what we’ve learned so far. The best part is that everyone is pitching in and playing to their strengths – it’s pretty incredible to watch.

Be prepared. You may never need it, but you will sleep better at night.

Today I am thankful

  1. for potluck and a network of loving friends.
  2. for the wealth of information that people share on the interwebs.
  3. for craigslist and the worm farmer (it’s a long story).

For what are you thankful?

August 2 Friends

with 4 comments

Sometimes your best friend is the one who makes you take a break. That’s Bob.  She’s the only one that doesn’t know she’s sick and she teaches me to be a better person – well, she tries her best.

Today I am thankful

  1. that this morning Bob showed me her best Cirque Du Soleil net-free leap yet  – right into my coffee cup – and we both laughed (although she laughed way more than I did).
  2. for a wide open schedule (and for the focus not to waste it).
  3. that our ancient HVAC is still chugging along faithfully in this thick hot summer air.

For what are you thankful?
