Today I am simply thankful for ..

  1. the paths of my life – twisted, winding, uphill and down – but always worth the walk.
  2. time spent rediscovering family.
  3. gut-splitting giggles to tears.

For what are you thankful?

Eloise 1914 -2010

Grandma taught me how to shoot a rifle, dress a deer, bait a fish hook, bake biscuits and cut my own switch. One day she casually saved me from a copperhead snake – with a rake. She was a woman of few words, so when she spoke it was wise to listen. She had little formal schooling but she could doctor just about any ailment or at least convince you it was nothing to worry about. She was frugal but generous, flexible but just a little stubborn.

At 95 her eyes were failing her, but she could still see things that other people couldn’t. She wrote me a letter the day she died; I guess she knew more than most as well.

Thank you, Grandma.

September 13 Hummingbird

I have spent a good deal of my spare time in the last few weeks watching the hummingbirds in our backyard. They are a marvel to behold.

Initially, I put up a bright yellow feeder and literally within minutes it was swarming with bees – a lot of bees. They came out of nowhere to form a shape shifting clove of scary bee-mess. Apparently bees are attracted to yellow, so we switched back to the smaller red feeder. Now the bees are gone and the birds are back.

Today I am thankful for

  1. peaceful distractions like our hummingbirds.
  2. new music that reminds me that simple authenticity is golden.
  3. football season!

For what are you thankful?
