July 18 Les règles de l’art

with 6 comments

On Bastille Day, entry to The Louvre is free of charge. If you get there early – around 0800 – you can stand in line with a few thousand other people, wait patiently until 0900 and then upon entry, charge into the Denon gallery to be one of the first of the day to peer at The Mona Lisa.

That took 10 minutes, and if you stand around longer soon enough you will start to feel the pressure of the following throngs upon your back.  Now what?  Allow me to suggest Gregor Erhart’s St. Mary Magdalene; she’s a few floors below, but her radiance fills the hall.

Today I am thankful for

  1. jet lag, or at least the residual feeling of moving slowly through history as a reminder to slow down and enjoy the ride.
  2. time out to cheer on the USA Women’s Soccer team and applaud Japan’s hard fought World Cup victory.
  3. art, and artists and les règles de l’art .
For what are you thankful?

July 11th Gardens and Gardeners

with 3 comments

Each second we live is a new and unique moment of the universe, a moment that will never be again. And what do we teach our children?

We teach them that two and two make four, and that Paris is the capital of France. When will we also teach them what they are?

We should say to each of them: Do you know what you are? You are a marvel. You are unique. In all the years that have passed, there has never been another child like you. Your legs, your arms, your clever fingers, the way you move. You may become a Shakespeare, a Michelangelo, a Beethoven. You have the capacity for anything. Yes, you are a marvel. And when you grow up, can you then harm another who is, like you, a marvel?

You must work, we must all work, to make the world worthy of its children.  — Pablo Picaso

I am off to marvel at the world under the guise of work. It is a precious gift, and I pray I unwrap it like a child at Christmas.

Today I am thankful for

  1. the gift of gardens and gardeners
  2. rosewood, spruce and maple – for catgut and steel – for harmonies and melodies.
  3. long soft grass and warm summer nights.

For what are you thankful?

A quiet 4th of July feels like an oxymoron, but that’s exactly what I was treated to this weekend.  I hope you had time to celebrate the freedoms we have in your own way, and still have the energy leftover to protect them.

Today I am thankful for

  1. a bit of rest
  2. quiet moments tucked between the explosions
  3. blackberry joy.
For what are you thankful?
